How does it work?

Being a tenant is not an innate skill but is a combination of a number of different skills that can be learned: legal rights and responsibilities, financial management, communication and maintenance skills. Tenants, landlords and community organizations all benefit from RentSmart Education and knowledge.

RentSmart Education is grounded in adult education and transformative training principles- the learning process matters as much as the content.

Where does it work?

We understand the importance of high quality housing and lifeskills education in helping people have successful tenancies. Successful tenancies and housing stability are key to wellness in our communities and preventing homelessness.

Rent Smart is delivered by organizations and housing providers in several provinces across Canada. Principles of empowerment guide us to incorporate consumer choice, self-determination, and client-driven supports that are accessible and inclusive in all that we offer.

RentSmart Education builds confidence and it empowers our participants.

Educators

How do I become a Certified Community Educator?

Register and attend a RentSmart Educator training program. You’ll find upcoming courses here.

What does RentSmart Educator training cover?

Over 3 days, we provide an overview of the Rent Smart model, adult education and facilitation principles, and strategies for successful tenancies. Participants engage with the curriculum and practice teaching and facilitating. By the end, participants are familiar with the curriculum (though practice is still necessary) and have a plan for integrating Rent Smart into their organization and community.

Who is this course for?

RentSmart Educator is an ideal program for any social service provider or non-profit organization who work with individuals requiring housing support guidance.

Who is this course not for?

The RentSmart Educator course is not intended for renters in need of housing support and education. It’s also not intended for landlords specifically looking for tenancy law education and guidance.

How much does it cost to become a Certified Community Educator?

The cost to attend the 3 day training is $650/person, and includes digital materials, the training + facilitation.

How much does it cost to deliver the RentSmart program?

To address the resounding feedback from Educators and organizations that broader support, course management systems, data requirements and resources are needed, Rent Smart has implemented a subscription model. Since 2021, a subscription account is required for your organization and Educators to deliver any Rent Smart educational courses or material.

The cost of materials ranges from $10-$25/person. Most educators deliver 2-4 courses/year.
*These materials may be discounted under your Rent Smart Subscription level.

The estimated annual cost per course is $250/manuals + staff time, food (in-person) and participation costs.

Why do you charge fees for Rent Smart?

We used to get funding to share the Rent Smart program. But more communities requested training than we had funding for. So, instead of denying this important training, we implemented training fees to cover the costs. The same is for materials – we need to constantly update and add to them and this has costs associated. Fees allow us to keep on top of this!

What is my agreement with Rent Smart?

Once you become a RentSmart Educator you agree you will uphold, the following principles when delivering Rent Smart programs:

  • Education works most effectively when it is voluntary and participatory;
  • People are experts in and make their own choices about their lives and their housing; the education recognizes this expertise and adds additional knowledge and skills;
  • Adherence to common program and educational standards is key to the success of graduates;
  • Community educators can adapt the curriculum to meet the needs of their participants, while maintaining RentSmart standards and achieving learning objectives;
  • Common impact measurement guides the direction of Rent Smart and Community Educator network;
  • Rent Smart is responsive to community need and to invitation.

What support do I receive from Rent Smart staff?

Through our new subscription model, we help you deliver the program and troubleshoot any issues you may have. We provide you with marketing materials, evaluation forms, a course management system, and personalized support – that will bolster your confidence to hit the ground running! Learn more about our subscription options.

I am interested in the training but not sure if I will deliver courses. Is this a fit for me?

Not everyone who takes the RentSmart Educator training delivers courses. However, almost everyone finds value in terms of supporting successful tenancies, understanding prevention strategies, practicing facilitation skills, and adding this as an important tool to their professional toolbox.

How does Rent Smart fit within Housing First?

RentSmart© Education is delivered by many Housing First organizations and housing providers. Our principles of empowerment and never mandating education meets Housing First principles of consumer choice and self-determination, client-driven supports, and providing supports that can be accessed regardless of housing form. We find that for people exiting homelessness, RentSmart Basics is the best ‘fit’. The RentSmart Certificate program works as people are moving along the housing continuum to more independent living.
