In November, our team has traveled to Iqaluit to begin a community consultative process to adapt the RentSmart program for Nunavut. We are excited at being invited to partner with the Nunavut Housing Corporation, Ilitaqsiniq Nunavut Literacy Council and the Qikiqtani Inuit Association to develop a Tenant Literacy Program in Nunavut, which will include community review, translation into all official languages, and indigenous artwork and graphic design. This innovative collaborative curriculum will be grounded in Inuit Societal Values and developed to address the unique housing and tenancy issues in Canada’s far north.
The project and process, which will begin in early 2020, will include primary focus on the history of colonialism, its impact on indigenous culture, economic and housing context in Nunavut while building on the strength of self-government in housing context where the majority of people are indigenous and live in government housing. We can’t wait to learn more about this beautiful region of our country. Stay tuned for more updates regarding this exciting partnership.
