Welcome to the first BC segment of the year. Rent Smart BC has been active planning RS Educator trainings. Susana and I have just returned from teaching an Educator group in Vancouver at Aunt Leah’s Place last week! The class was full and the new Educators are going to be great facilitators! There will also be an Educator course in Victoria in June and October of this year. Thanks to our fabulous grant writing team, Andrew and Aygul, we are hoping that more than half of the seats in the October session will be subsidized!
From all of the free manuals that have been ordered, there are also a number of RentSmart Basic and Certificate courses running all over BC! It is great to see that the free manuals are removing some of the barriers for organizations to be able to run the courses.
Changes to the RTA, February 2020.
Some of you may have seen the press release in regards to security deposits. As of February 18, 2020, BC renters will no longer have to make a request for dispute resolution and wait for arbitration to have their security deposit be returned. The BC government has created a process that if the renter has an undisputed security deposit there is now an expedited process. So if a landlord does not make a claim to the RTB to retain part or all of the security deposit, a renter can request an expedited order. This means that renters no longer have to wait for the arbitration hearing! They can apply directly to the RTB to have their deposits returned. The order for repayment of the security deposit will be granted without service, without arbitration and without waiting! This order can than be given directly to the landlord for repayment.

Our next Collaborate call will be March 12th at 2:00. In this call we will be discussing the change to the RTA in regards to deposits, how to recruit participants to fill your classes and the Educator Dashboard Resources.
We are currently working on a schedule for the next 6 – 9 months of when the Collaborate calls will be held. This way you can add them to your calendar in advance.
Did you know that all of our calls are taped and archived, so if you missed the last call with Anita Moore, from the Credit Counselling Society, you can go back and listen. She gave a wealth of information on credit scores and improving credit rates.
